Get The Most Out of Every Burn
A little care goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to keep your candle burning beautifully.
Trim wick to 1/4 inch before every burn
Never burn more than 4 hours
First burn: Melt to the edges
Stop at 1/2 wax remaining
Every Thimble & Hearth candle is made to burn beautifully.
Follow these simple guidelines and your candle will reward you with hours of perfect fragrance and a clean, even burn every single time.
RULE 01
The First Burn is Everything
The most important burn of your candle's life is the very first one. The first time you light it, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before blowing it out. This usually takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the size of your candle.
Why this matters: The most important burn of your candle's life is the very first one. The first time you light it, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the vessel before blowing it out. This usually takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the size of your candle.
RULE 02
Trim your wick. Every single time.
Before every burn, trim your wick to approximately 1/4 inch. This is the single most important thing you can do to extend the life of your candle and keep it burning beautifully.
What happens without trimming: An untrimmed wick burns hotter than necessary, creates soot, causes mushrooming at the tip, and can damage the vessel over time. A trimmed wick burns clean, steady, and beautiful.
A simple wick trimmer makes this effortless and is worth every penny. Alternatively, a pair of small scissors works perfectly well.
RULE 03
Know your burn times.
Never burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. After 4 hours the wick can move, the vessel gets very hot, and the quality of the burn diminishes. Extinguish, allow to cool completely, trim the wick, and relight when you're ready.
Candle Size | Wicks | Expected Burn Time |
|---|---|---|
6 oz. candle tin
10 oz. candle
12 oz. candle
17 oz. candle
1 wick
1 wick
1 wick
2 wicks
35-40 hours
60-65 hours
70-80 hours
90-100 hours
Burn times are approximate and depend on wick trimming, burn duration, and environmental conditions.
When to stop: Never burn a candle all the way to the bottom of the vessel. Stop burning when approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains. Burning below this point can cause the vessel to overheat.
RULE 04
The essentials at a glance
Keep It Clean
Keep your candle free of debris. Matches, wick trimmings, and dust can become secondary wicks and cause uneven burning.
Store Cool and Dry
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight fades labels and affects fragrance oil over time. Keep the lid on when not in use.
Avoid Drafts
Burn away from open windows, vents, and fans. Air movement causes uneven burning and pushes the flame toward the vessel.
Frosting is Natural
Small white spots or a frosted appearance is called blooming. It's completely natural in coconut apricot wax and has no effect on burn quality or scent.
SAFETY FIRST
Always Burn Safely
Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface
Keep away from children and pets
Never move a burning candle
Stop burning at 1/2 inch of wax
Never leave a burning candle unattended
Keep away from curtains, bedding, paper
Keep away from drafts, open windows
Allow to cool completely before relighting
RULE 05
How to extinguish.
Use a candle snuffer rather than blowing out your candle. Blowing creates smoke, can scatter hot wax, and pushes the wick off center. A snuffer extinguishes cleanly and keeps everything exactly where it should be.
The candle dipper trick: If you don't have a snuffer, a candle dipper works beautifully. Dip the wick into the melted wax to extinguish it, then straighten the wick back up. No smoke, no mess, no wandering wick.
Don't Throw Away the Vessel.
